FAQs
What factors will affect the viewing range of my Night Owl night vision device?
Viewing distance will vary depending on conditions such as fog and rain. In enclosed spaces that are completely dark, an infrared illuminator will increase your viewing range.
Will my Night Owl night vision device work in extremely low light, or absolutely no light conditions?
Yes. Night Owl night vision devices use Generation 1 intensifier tubes that enable you to see in conditions were there is only ambient light from the moon, stars, or the glow from a nearby city or town. For no-light conditions, Night Owl night vision devices come equipped with built-in infrared illuminators.
What type of light source can be harmful to a night vision device?
Strong, direct lights including vehicle headlights, strong flashlights, and daylight may be harmful and are likely to damage your night vision device. Only use your night vision device in low to no light conditions.
Which Night Owl product would you recommend for a first-time user?
When considering purchasing your first night vision device, our recommendation would depend on the recreational use you intend for it. For fishing or boating, we recommend the waterproof NONM4X-MR. If you drop it in the water, it will actually float. For activities like hunting that require your hands to be free, we recommend either of Night Owl's goggles. These units are compact, lightweight, and include comfortable, easy-to-use headgear. For camping and nature viewing, a National Geographic monocular is an excellent choice!
Are night vision devices and/or infrared illuminators harmful people?
No. All our night vision products, inclusive of our Rigel Optics product line comply with FDA and international regulations in terms of safety for an electronic device, similar to other electronic devices such as televisions, and radios. Individuals with sensitive eyes such as those who experience eye fatigue while watching television, may experience the same sort of fatigue if they use their night vision viewer for a prolonged time. Infrared illuminators are generally low power devices, which do not cause harm to humans when making eye contact with them.
How long will the batteries last in my night vision device?
Typically, the batteries in your night vision device will last for up to 20-40 hours of continuous use if the Infrared Illuminator is turned OFF. When using the IR Illuminator, expect 30-40% less operating time.
What is Generation 1 Technology?
Generation 1 technology was originally developed for the military. It uses an electronic intensifier tube to amplify ambient light without the need for an infrared illuminator. Its availability to the public has made night vision widely affordable.
